How To Sit Properly in the Driver’s Seat!
Sitting in car can be quite troublesome for someone who has back problems. Especially for those who have to sit in vehicles for an extended period of time, the whole problem can seem like a nightmare.
Although, even without having back problems, one can experience soreness and discomfort while sitting in a car’s seat during a long drive. Sometimes, if the car’s seat doesn’t fit the figure of the person sitting, it can cause soreness in no time.
While anybody can get hurt by this, the troubles associated with the car seats is especially true for those that fall beyond the norm such as taller than average, shorter than average and those with either overly wider or slender builds.
People with such body types especially find themselves in a fix regarding fitting in an average seat.
A lot of aftermarket or otherwise seat adjustments are developed for ensuring that people can have a comfortable ride. Such is the need for a comfortable seat that making seats and relatable accessories for easing the journey has itself become an industry.
These days many cars have aft and fore seat adjustments on a slider, reclining adjustments, lumbar back support and height adjustments. Some manufacturers even offer a tilt function for supporting the back of the thighs, and some offer an adjustable distance from the back of the knees to the seat.
However, despite so many adjustments being available, even then, people face discomfort and that can sometimes be attributed to how the car seat is adjusted.
Adjust the distance from the steering wheel
For drivers, one of the most important seat adjustment to make is of correction of the distance of the seat from the vehicle’s steering wheel. If the holding the steering wheel makes you tense or too loose in cars and else, and it’s not possible to properly manipulate the steering wheel, then there’s no gain in driving since it’ll not be useful from the back point of view.
When the arms are stressed by just holding onto the steering wheels, the tension travels and extends within your back and causes discomfort and pain, even more so for those with a history of back pain.
Tip: Only adjust the car seat when the vehicle is at a complete stop. Adjusting the seat while driving can cause a jerk while driving and divert attention for all the wrong reasons.
Another way to check is if your elbows create an angle of less than 60 degrees, then a person is sitting too close, and should adjust the seat further back.
The arms should not be in a locked position, and only slightly bent. When the body is relaxed and one sits comfortably, there is no discomfort or fatigue associated in gripping the steering wheel or driving in general.
Recline your seat properly
When sitting in the car’s driver seat, one should sit tall comfortably, even if it takes practice.
The general tendency of people is to have the car seat reclined too much. A proper driving position requires full attention to the road and hence, one should rather sit as upright as possible.
Adjust the seat height
Not all the vehicles provide the option of driver’s seat height adjustment, but if your car does, then, make sure to use it to help achieve a seating position optimised for you rather than just sitting on the stock levels. Adjusting the height will also allow you to look out of the windscreen carefully and relieves pressure on the back of the thighs, if and when done correctly.
Adjust the lumbar support
For now, only a few vehicles have the option for lumbar support adjustments, although it’s more essential. The main purpose of having a lumbar support is help relieve the back stress from sitting in car for too long.
For people who drive for living, lumbar support is important, although, if you need a temporary one, you can also use a towel for help with it.
Adjust the headrest position
The headrest isn’t a comfort device or to rest heads, rather, it is a safety device that acts to prevent whiplash in the case of being rear ended.
Unless it is positioned properly, it can be far away in the important time when it is required and being close enough would be annoying as well. Hence, proper positioning is important too.
Such are the proper ways of adjustment for sitting in a car seat, especially when it comes to the driver’s seat.
Initially, the seating position and posture may feel awkward when it’s corrected. However, over the time it’ll help the person drive well and be in a much better shape, leading a pain free life.
If there is pain, then make any due changes. After a few shorter trips, one will feel acclamatized to the seating position.
