How to Increase Car Battery Life
In most modern cars, usually, the car batteries last for around six years.
However, this depends upon how the person maintains the car and keeps up on all the things required for properly managing the car.
One of the most common reasons for the significant drain in car battery life is because of lack of maintenance as well as negligence over time from the owner’s end. This causes shortening of the battery life and limits it to a mere 2-4 years of use.
However, if the cost of battery is taken into account as well as the ways to ensure that the battery’s health remains same, then it will bring some people to their senses. This is because if properly maintained, the cost and life turn out to be better, thus helping the person save more and efficiently. These are a few things a person can do that’ll help improve the battery life of the car batteries.
Limiting Electronics Use While Engine is Sitting Idle
This is one of the most common ways for a car battery of limiting the car battery life. When electronics in the car, such as the stereo and the headlights are left on while the engine is off, this leads to increased load on the battery.
When the engine is on and moving, the battery can charge, but when the engine is off and the car sitting idle, the car’s battery is effectively discharging and when done over extended periods, leads to battery woes, and can even cause the car to shut down in the middle of the road.
Although, cars do have an indicator that tells if the headlights haven’t been switched off before leaving the car, a lot of people fail to pay heed to this warning. This leads to the over draining of the car battery over something that could have been simply avoided just like that.
If the person is using the radio or AC while the car is idle, it is better to turn on the engine once every few minutes to let the car charge up a bit and avoid any large drain over the car’s battery.
Giving the Car’s Battery Regular Attention and Maintenance
Corrosion built up is common for all car batteries and usually happens around the battery terminals.
This particular issue isn’t affected by the general health, or voltage present in the car’s battery and limits the power flow through the battery.
However, this is the easiest to tackle, as compared to other issues that affect the battery.
Corrosion can be easily removed physically, by the use of either a set of pliers or a screwdriver.
While mild or moderate cases of the build up can be tackled at home, the serious ones may require professional clean up.
There is also a tip that a person can make use of. When faced with the same issue while driving that causes the car not to start, pouring soft drink can help the car work. Since the soft drink such as Pepsi etc. contains Carbonic acid, it helps remove the built up to an extent. But make sure to clean up the mess with water when at home, as the soft drink is usually, sugary in nature which can make the whole area sticky and prone to small animals.
Keeping the car battery clean is essential, no matter how much the vehicle is in use. Even if the person doesn’t drive daily, even then, the car’s engine should be turned off for a few minutes every few days to ensure the battery remains charged and active.
However, if the person won’t be using the car for a long time, then the car’s battery should be disconnected, or a pair of jumper cables should be kept in the car. This will prevent any future woes due to non-usage of the battery over extended periods of time.
Taking into Account the Climate and the Temperature
Both extremes of the temperature can be unbearable on the car battery. This can lead to the car battery losing its charge more frequently than required.
A car that has been kept in freezing temperature overnight may cause the battery present to lose all its charge and hence, get completely drained. Therefore, proper precautions should be taken.
A basic way to do so is to purchase a specialized insulation blanket that can be wrapped around the car’s battery. This will help lessen the climate’s impact too. Additionally, if there is a garage present too, make sure to use it in the cold months.
If there is already a maintenance and upkeep schedule, then it should be adhered to, strictly and enforced rather well in the winter season.
If the car isn’t starting when there is a need to go someplace, one should make use of jumper cables to jump start the car. For more information on this, you can go through our blog on How to Jumpstart your Car.
