Car Crash: How to Handle the Situation
When someone learns to drive, they usually get giddy and aren’t much sure about how to drive and can panic, leading them to unfavorable situations. Each passing day, hundreds of people pass their driving exam and get the license to drive on roads. With increased numbers of cars on the road, the roads can be a risky business at times.
No matter how carefully a person drives, it is possible that a person can get involved in an accident or witness one. In such cases, there are certain things that a person should know. While running away from the crash might seem like a good option, but it isn’t. It can lead to further prosecution by the law enforcement authorities.
Basics to Follow if Involved in Road Accident
If a person is involved in a road accident, no matter how minor or major the accident, it is important to stay calm. A lot of times even if the individual isn’t responsible and it’s the fault of the other person, anger can deteriorate the situation further leading to road rage.
This is why being calm is necessary. The first thing to do would be to warn the traffic around the cars. Using of hazard lights and by placing the warning triangle on the road is necessary. Make sure to park the cars by the side of the road or if you can’t, then switch off the engine.
Calling the Emergency Number
Then, make sure to call the emergency numbers for the area and inform the police/emergency responder about the nature of the accident and if there is a need for ambulance or someone if injured.
Calling and informing the emergency number is important and should be done at all costs. Although, make sure to inform the police of such important details:
- Location of the accident
- Telephone number for further correspondence
- A brief description of the accident
- If there is a need for ambulance and if there are casualties
Till the time, the emergency services arrive; if there are casualties, try to administer simple first aid for anyone injured.
In case someone isn’t breathing, try to administer CPR by clearing the mouth of the person, then gently tilt the person’s head back while holding their nose, and blow gently into the mouth of the person at intervals of 5 seconds. In case of severe bleeding, apply pressure on the wound to curb the bleeding.
Make a Note of the Following
There are some details that you need to note and jot down, for the sake of police and the insurance. For that reason, these are the details you can note:
- What happened?
- Date and time?
- Details of the vehicles involved(color, make, registration number on number plate, estimated speed, direction of the vehicle)
- Contact information of the party involved(full name, mobile details, address, insurance details if possible)
- Picture of the damage to the cars
If a person fails to stop after an accident and runs away, the person may be liable for a strict penalty from the court. Minor accidents can be handled by the insurance payout in case there is not much damage to the cars.
