From Original Sketch to XC40: Volvo Achieves a Rare Feat
Volvo has achieved a brand new feat with its XC40. The crossover’s look on paper is similar to the car it has made.
Volvo Design Chief, Officer Thomas Ingenlath, said that they were convinced they had something in their hands with the car when they saw the car. And then, they took it from the sketch to a full-fledged crossover.
Ian Kettle, a graduate of the London’s Royal College of Art and a British exterior designer designed the sketch. His sketch was taken since unlike other colleagues, he didn’t present a scaled-down version of XC90 and XC60 that day. This seems to have come from him knowing that the car would ride on a different platform.
For him, the design is something of a ‘tough little robot’ since he penned the drawing during a period when he got inspired by science fiction.
Ingenlath is seemingly proud of Kettle’s creation being an exception. This considering that in the modern time, rarely only do the original sketch survives various critiques before design getting finalized.
Ingenlath further said that the XC40 isn’t a watered-down model and is exactly the car that they wanted to develop.
