RTA Claims 2.9 Mn Used Public Transport During Eid-al-Fitr
Dubai Roads and Transport Authority revealed that the ridership in the emirate’s public transport system during the Eid-al-Fitr holiday turned out to be around 2.9 million.
In a statement regarding the effectiveness of the planning that RTA had done in anticipation of the holiday, the RTA provided the ridership figure of 2,891,557.
Dubai Metro seems to have been the favorite of the people living in the Emirate with 1,500,899 riders using the metro. The Red Line was used by 980,278 riders while the green line had a fair share of 520,621 passengers.
RTA announced that the users of the Dubai Tram equaled 55,889. The second most used mode of transport were the public buses that helped 1,153,555 people go from one destination to other. Also, around 181,214 people made use of the marine transportation provided in the emirate.
CEO, Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector in the RTA, Nasir Hamad Bu Shehab said: ” In anticipation of the holiday, the RTA had laid down a comprehensive system to manage the public transport movement. Certain areas that are tourist hotspots, such as the Dubai Mall-Burj Khalifa Downtown had been given due focus.”
Despite proper planning by the RTA and the Dubai Police, 15,263 phone calls were received by the Dubai Police’s Command and Control Center during the festival.
Acting Director at the Dubai Police Operations Department, Major General Ahmed Abdul Rahman Aqeel revealed that around 1,346 accidents had been reported in the Eid-al-Fitr holiday period. There were no drowning or marine transport related accidents though.
