Motorcycle Delivery Drivers to Face Measures to Promote Safety
According to the latest reports by the Traffic Department of Dubai and RTA, the number of motorcycle accidents in the year 2016 were found to have increased over previous years. Most of these accidents or additional traffic citations involved motorcycle delivery drivers. This is a growing concern for the police, and it is taking steps to discourage such cases.
For a variety of reasons, the delivery drivers cut in through traffic, zigzagging at high speeds. Dubai is a city that has a large number of cars, and the growing number of delivery drivers driving in a rash manner has been causing trouble for the car drivers.
A lot of such motorcycle drivers are from countries where bikes are more prominently used while Dubai’s known for its cars and a more speedy environment.
The number of casualties in 2016 that involved motorcycles rose to 16 people up from 10 deaths in 2015, while bikes resulted in 824 traffic citations in 2016.
To improve safety for the delivery drivers and to discourage further accidents and rash driving, Dubai RTA will start enforcing measures from June 6, which include new specifications for the delivery boxes used on the bikes. The new law seeks to regulate the specifications on the delivery box to restrict misbalancing of the motorcycles.
This move will just be the first step in a slew of measures yet to come.
Additionally, the fines are set to increase from July 1, with the motorcycle drivers being charged the same amount as a car owner.
