Hydrogen Fuelling Station Unveiled in Dubai in Keeping with Vision 2021
The UAE dealer for Toyota, Al-Futtaim Motors has collaborated with the France-based Air Liquide, and have jointly inaugurated a hydrogen station in Dubai Festival City, a first of its kind in the entire UAE. The hydrogen fuelling station will be used by Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles(FCEVs). Although, don’t just buy the hydrogen-powered car just like that.
This new facility will come under the following launch of a collaborative study related to the feasibility of “establishment of a hydrogen-based society” in the entire UAE. This also aims to drastically lower the emissions of CO2 keeping in mind the UAE Vision 2021.
The new hydrogen fuelling station is based out of the Toyota service centre in Al Badia will allow enabling of larger-scale deployment of the Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles. This is a part of a pilot program that starts from May 2017 and aims to test the zero-emission FCEV tech on the roads of UAE.
At the event, there was a hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai, which emits only water from its tailpipe. In the car’s onboard Fuel Cell Stack, Oxygen in the air combines with Hydrogen for generating electricity to power the electric motor of the vehicle. Because of this, the driving experience is a lot similar to that of an EV like Tesla, only it has no long recharging time. The Mirai can be refilled with Hydrogen in a period of fewer than 5 minutes and can travel 500 km once refuelled to full tank.
However, it remains to be seen if these Hydrogen-based cars can become as popular as EVs and are just as embraced. The Mirai costs about AED 210,000 in the US.
