Dubai RTA to Check Smart Traffic Signals for Autonomous Vehicles
Dubai RTA is working on a plan to test vehicle-to-infrastructure Tech by 2018. The technology will allow autonomous cars and traffic signals to communicate with each other.
Lat year, the initial tests of the EZ10, the driverless vehicle had been held at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, Downtown Dubai. After the first tests, trials have been repeated around three other locations within the city. Dubai hopes to have 25 percent transportation trips through driverless smart vehicles by 2030.
Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO, RTA Licensing Agency and Chairman, Smart Vehicle Committee said, “We are interested in the trial as a part of the trials that will be carried out for autonomous cars.”
The route that allows the testing of autonomous vehicles crossing traffic will be monitored. There will be a traffic signal at the junction for testing as to how will the shuttle bus can provide input to the traffic signal so the signal can show a red signal when a shuttle bus is approaching and so on.
Bahrozyan went on to say that the Dubai and its signal systems are fully compatible with the autonomous vehicles.
The move will lead to supposedly more “effective and efficient” transportation that can reduce vehicular traffic congestion.
