Dubai Metro Red Line to be Partially Closed on Weekends
In preparation for the World Expo 2020, Dubai RTA will keep a section of the Dubai Metro Red Line closed on the weekends. The plan is to integrate the rail network with an extension for the World Expo 2020 site.
The announcement was made by the rail agency regarding the constructional changes on the red line. The changes require partial closure of the Jumeirah Lakes Towers Station and the Ibn Battuta Station. The weekdays on which the closure will be in effect are Fridays and Saturdays from July 28 to October 14, 2017. In the time duration, metro travelers are to be provided with a free shuttle bus service between the two closed stations on the weekends. The July to October period is ten weeks.
As per Mohammed Yousef Al Mudharreb, Director, Rail Operation, RTA Rail Agency, “RTA has earlier conducted intensive field studies along with the contractor. This was done to ensure an alternative plan, so the commuting riders don’t have to suffer.”
According to what has been decided, the contractor will be upgrading the automatic operation system and adding switches point for enabling trains to switch rail tracks so they can return to JLT and Ibn Battuta Metro Stations.
Metro commuters traversing towards the UAE Exchange Station will be required to get off at the JLT Station and then take the free bus ride to Ibn Battuta Station. From Ibn Battuta Station, they can continue the journey ahead and vice versa for someone traveling in the direction of Al Rashidiya Station.
