General Motors Implements e-shifter on 2018 GMC Terrain
General Motors may be elevated to the position of being the design leader due to its 2018 GMC Terrain. This fanciful title will come because of the latest generation of its automatic transmission shifters.
In past years, various carmakers have worked for developing intuitive designs for the electronic transmission shifters, or as they are alternatively known, e-shifters. The e-shifters use electrical controls rather mechanical components for connecting the shifter as well as the transmission for changing gears and driving modes.
To get the job done, carmakers have done a varying set of tasks, that range from using rotary knobs, lever, and knobs to emulating traditional shifters. A lot of these design changes have caused confusion and angered customers, and in some cases, spawned a class action lawsuit, which ended with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalling 1.1 million vehicles.
The benefits of the latest electronic systems, which is known as the shift by wire, include liberated space in the car cabin, as well as quicker shifting since the bulkier mechanism of a traditional system, aren’t deemed necessary.
The spacing and placement of the horizontal controls ( PRNDL+/ ) make it easier for a driver of 2018 GMC Terrain to have fingers on R and D and thumb on P. This allows the driver to easily switch between the three modes without having to check which mode is being chosen.
It’s also accident-proof as if the driver hits P during driving, a message pops up on the cluster saying,” Condition not correct for the shift.” Similarly, if the driver selects R just like that, then the same error message displays and the car shifts into neutral mode.
Drivers who have a foot on the brake can also hit the Engine stop/start button, which turns the vehicle on and off for automatically putting the vehicle in park.
The system will be provided as a standard across the three turbocharged offerings of 2018 GMC Terrain. However, GMC officials have declined to commit if the new shifter design will expand across the company or the brand.
